  • Bipolar I disorder: Had at least one manic episode 
  • Bipolar II disorder: Had at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode
  • Cyclothymic disorder: Shifts of hypomania symptoms and depressive symptoms 

Warning Signs/SYMPTOMS ⚠︎︎

Symptoms of bipolar disorder can be different for every person. Below are some potential signs.
  • Extreme mood swings 
  • Fatigue
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • ​Substance abuse
  • Extreme lows/depression
  • Mania 
  • Lack of appetite 
  • Disrupted senses/hallucinations 
  • Strained relationships 
  • Inability to focus 
  • Impulsive behavior 
  • Irritability 
  • Confusion 
  • Irregular sleep

RISK FACTORS

Some may be at higher risk of having bipolar disorder if they have experienced any of the following:
  • ​Genetics/Relatives with bipolar disorder
  • Chemical imbalances
  • Traumatic events
  • ​High stress
  • Substance misuse
  • Pregnancy

​How to Help

  • Immediate danger: Call 911
  • If you are diagnosed…
    • Avoid drugs and alcohol. 
    • Recognize warning signs. 
    • Seek treatment from a professional. 
    • Learn your triggers. 
    • Create a healthy lifestyle - exercise, hobbies, regular sleep, and diet. 
    • Join a support group. 
    • Surround yourself with positive influences.
  •  ​If you know someone…
    • Join a support group.
    • Set boundaries for your own health. 
    • Be understanding and show compassion.
    • Educate yourself about the disorder.
    • Be supportive but know when to let a professional intervene. 
    • Help them make an emergency plan. 
    • Be patient.
    • Check up on them periodically. 
    • Watch for sign of suicide.
