S U I C I D E    A W A R E N E S S

According the World Health Organization, around 800,000 people die by suicide every year. Two factors are the fear to seek help and the stigma around suicidal thoughts. So, let's educate ourselves and others to help people find their voice. YOU MATTER! 

​WARNING SIGNS ⚠︎︎

Warning signs of suicide can be different for every person. Below are some potential signs.
  • Sudden use of alcohol or drugs
  • Talking about feeling like a burden or feeling trapped
  • Being in extreme emotional or physical pain
  • Withdrawal from regular activities 
  • ​Talking about killing oneself (can be subtle comments) or feeling hopeless
  • Extreme mood swings 
  • Thoughts about death
  • Detachment from family and friends
  • Feelings of isolation or loneliness
  • Making plans for suicide
  • Sudden reckless acts

​RISK FACTORS

Some may be at higher risk of suicide if they exhibit any of the following:
  • ​History of alcohol/substance abuse
  • Mental illness
  • Previous suicide attempt
  • Abuse or trauma history
  • Recent loss
  • Major illness or injury
  • Lack of social support

​HOW TO HELP 

  • Immediate danger: Call 911
If you know someone with suicidal thoughts: 
  • Reduce access to lethal objects. 
  • Look for suicide risk factors and warning signs.
  • Encourage the person to seek treatment/therapy.
  • Help them make plans for the future.
  • Reach out & offer to listen to them.
  • Be respectful of their feelings & do not judge them.
  • Reassure them that things will get better.
  • Take care of yourself, not just them. 
  • Check on & communicate with them.
If you have suicidal thoughts:
  • Call emergency services.
  • Talk to someone you trust.
  • Seek professional help. 
  • Remember that the hard time are only temporary. 
  • Find healthy coping activities and outlets. 
  • Figure out your triggers. 
  • Create a crisis plan - determine what support you need and what could be helpful when in crisis.
  • Create a crisis box -  filled with items that bring you happiness and emergency contacts.
